I have a 1979 115L6 and i need to change the shifter and throttle cables due to old age and freying. Is this hard to do and how hard is it to get the adjustments right. I'm pretty mechanical as I fix machines for a living. Also can anyone tell me the model # of the control in the picture. I thank you all ahead of time as i know how helpful the people on this forum are. Thanks

Re: 115 control cables question

Frank, It is not hard to change the control cables. If they are the proper length for the boat, buy the same length for replacements, if not, they are available in "foot increments". Ask the store for the correct model cables for that motor. They are very common and usually in stock, but the newer Mercs use a different cable, I believe.

Simply put the motor into neutral and remove the old cables. Install the new ones into the control unit. The control unit splits in half, the cables are held in by cotter pins. There is no adjustment on the control side of the cable. Now route them to the motor, and adjust the shift cable (control in neutral) barrell nut to fit on the shift slide, without moving the shift slide. Now adjust the motor to minimum throttle, and adjust the barrel nut so the cable fits the throttle arm of the motor.

be careful opening the controller, the wires may be brittle.

i love reading these posts even though I don't have the issue. It's just neat to see the storm trooper figure all this stuff out
