Re: 115 EFI 4-stroke ran with no oil, now alarm sounds
Well, finally I got a authorized Merc/Mariner mechanic to come and do a diagnostic test of my outboard engine.
The crankshaft sensor was showing a fault and he said he could hear the engine was knocking. Although he saw no metal slivers in the oil and there was no friction points when he manually turned the flywheel.
The engine has run 850 hours and the crankshaft sensor went on at around 560 hours (perhaps it means it started at 560 hours or maybe it has been on for 560 hours, I am not sure how to read it, and I forgot to ask).
The mechanic says it is probably the crankshaft bearings and perhaps the crankshaft needs to be changed.
We ran the engine for a few seconds at a time, but without water. The alarm did not sound like it had done before and I am thinking it is because the oil level, which was WAY too high (the previous owner put way too much oil in last time), is now back to normal (the mechanic tapped some oil).
So now I am just waiting to hear what its gonna cost to change the crankshaft bearings and perhaps the crankshaft.
