115 engine noise

Thanks for the suggestions about lubrication in a 2+2 classic merc 115. I've got engine noise in this motor that is proving hard to diagnose. I hate to think that it's a bearing (2003 motor) but not sure what else creates a "rattle" from idle to about 2500rpm and sometimes when I back off the throttle from 3000+ to come off plane.<br />- timing? plugs? if bearing, diagnose visually or by stethiscope?

I get the same rattle in my 96 2+2 115 Mercury when I back off the throttle feom high speed. I think it is something in the prop area. I had a similar noise in my 2005 50 hp I had last year. I have no idea what it is. Let us know if you find out.
