Hi,
Let me first start off by saying thanx for considering my question and thanx for any help tis reall appreciated. ok the prob.
1)My son took it to the from my house to the storage he forgot to raise the motor. so he broke the skey below the prop off. after he got home we took off the cover for the lower unit nothing bent or broke thank god. :) so we ran it on the water hose and it ran fine. we took it out to the lake to run it and after starting it on warm-up lever , she warmed up and we were off...so we thought. max throttle was moving us at a whopping 4 mph. could the linkage be off that bad ......please give any suggestions i have a tourney to go too in a couple days.

1985 evinrude v-4- motor
thanx, tex

Breaking of the skeg is fairly common and I believe because it's aluminum it makes it easy to repair and it gives way before the important things do. If you have the piece it can be welded back on or replaced with a stainless "skeg guard". Breaking it away would not effect performance as drastic as you state. If the gear housing was not damaged and you have F N R then you are okay. I would start seriously looking elsewhere for the performance problem. Are you equipped with a tach? When were the carbs last cleaned? Plugs? Power packs are they okay.

Bob

With wide open throttle, what kind of RPM were you getting?

What is the "cover for the lower unit" that you took off?

Have you physically looked at the throttle plates to see if they open fully, with throttle control in WOT position?

schematic,

i looked at them today and full throttle they arent opening all the way. i think it has something to do with my shifting cable but i was also told the adjustments could be off. why will it run fine on the water hose but when i try to run it at the lake its a no-go.... thanx please resond

when on a hose, you have no engine load and RPM will ramp up quickly, even 1/4 throttle. Adjust cable to accomodate wide open throttle plates...then try again on the lake....
