The situation: 115 Evinrude E115ELEUC
This boat was brought to me by a customer who bought it off of a friend. He stated that it has a running issue where it will not get above 3000 RMP and has exhausted all leads in repairing the motor. This engine has the optical ignition system on it just to make this a better description.. The customer said that he went through the carbs, fuel, and checked spark and compression. I have also went back through these items and verified that they are in good working order. He also said that the engine was a hard start and would not idle when he brought it in. After doing my preliminary checks, the motor starts up and idles just fine on its own. It is a cold running engine that gives a sneeze or two in the very beginning of the start up, but after that it has no flaws while idling..
I took this boat to the lake to duplicate the running issue. This motor will rev up in neutral smooth all the way to the rev limiter, but then on its own slowly and smoothly bring itself back to a state of around 3200 rpm. It does not jump or bounce but holds this quite well. If I dump it back to neutral the engine normally stalls. While running at WOT I sprayed a bit of gas through the carbs to see if it was starving for fuel. Each carb that was injected with fuel bogged down the engine even more which tells me it is not starving for fuel. The engine was timed to spec and does not seem to be the issue. I followed the service manual and verified voltage in all of the normal places and find that the voltage is good. I've pulled the rectifier and ran the engine and it has no changes in the running. I've pulled the temp sensors and no change.
I don't see this engine very often in my location. Maybe twice in 6 years. I read and followed the CDI testing procedures and found nothing that has helped me so far. The CDI manual states that the power pack sometimes leaks RF signal which will put the engine in SLOW mode for no reason other than power pack failure. I'm looking for anyone with experience with these motors to maybe throw out a guiding hand before I throw down the extra cash on a power pack..
