I have a 1977 115 hp evinrude, it died on me in the water. When I started working on it at home I saw smoke come out of the starter and the battery. I checked all connection changed the battery. The battery was fried. The starter will engae but will not start the motor. I noticed that the positive post on the starter was loose at the frame of the starter, so I tightened it but then the starter would not turn just smoke as well as the battery. I have had this boat for 3 weeks so I am new to boating any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to iboats!

Smoke from the starter or battery is a very bad sign. I'll guess you have a shorted starter. The starter is drawing max current because it is dead shorted to ground internally. It's time for a new or rebuilt starter.
