A friend I have has a 80's merc 115 that I am considering buying. But I noticed that when we went out to test it there was water coming out of both the tell-tale and the exhaust port. Is this normal...!! or a sign of trouble..??

Normal. There are several places on lower unit where water comes out. The best and recommended test is to take it on the water on a boat.

Yeah on my 90, water shoots out the telltale, but it also seems to cool the exhaust too, so it shoots out the two exhaust relief ports just below the powerhead, and out through the hub on the prop too.

I would suggest taking a ride out on the water like he said ^, cuz it'll tell you alot about how the motor runs.

Yes it should be normal. the tell tale is mainly used for quick glance over your shoulder every time you start your motor...and it may take a few seconds before it comes out the tell tale.

Make sure the max spark advance is 21 degrees at most. Use mid-grade gas. Run a can or two of Mercury Powertune through it as directed on can to avaoid sticky rings. Use a good grade TCW-3 oil at 50-1. If it has an "auto-blend" get rid of it and pre-mix.

Any questions?

-W
