I was just wanting to know if I have the lower unit pulled from the power head. Is it possible to check what position neutral is in and if the motor is in neutral should the prop spin free back and forth. I know on the mercury motors I can spin the shift rod to see what gear is where. I am just trying to do the same with this hydro electric shift if possible while lowwer unit is off thank you.

As mentioned many times on this board, that type of gearcase shifts to forward whenever the engine stops turning. I guess you could test the shifting if you hook up a battery to the leads, ground the case, then either you or someone else somehow spin the driveshsft fast enough to permit the oil pump to develop pressure.

Believe it or not, if the water pump is removed you can wrap a starter rope around the drive shaft one turn and while holding both ends of the rope and pulling one end you can spin it fast enough to shift it. Battery has to be connected as previously stated.
