Check to make sure you get the same gear on both when pushing DOWN on the shift rod.-----Down gets you forward on the hydro-mechanical units.-------Also there may be a slight difference in gear ratio on the 135 vrs the 85 and 115 HP units.------76 was the last year for the 135 rated V-4 ------There was a mid year change on the 77 model V-4 too.

I've got two 1977 135hp Johnsons so I don't believe 1976 was the last year for the 135. Both are mechanical.

EDIT:
I was mistaken. My two 135's are 1976 and do have the hydro-mechanical shift.

76 was the last year for the 135. in 77 the 140 was introduced. The 135, the 99.6 engine, always had the hydro-mechanical shift. the 140 introduced the unassisted mechanical shift

Not sure where some folks get their information but 1977 was the first year for the 140 hp models.
