I just bought a boat with a 1981 johnson 115hp outboard. It starts great, idles great, runs up on rpms great in neutral.

When I put it in gear it does not go very fast maybe 8 mph.

I took the cover off and found 1 of the linkages not connected to anything. It is about 4 inches long and is at the upper section of where the other linkages are.

Can someone direct me to where I can get some help?

Not sure exactly what linkages you are talking about. Could you post a picture, that would help us help you.

Your timing advance may be loose from the fitting, if so you would have your symptoms.

It would connect under the flywheel, similar to the one in the thumbnail.

It was the timing advance!! Thank you all very much.
I bought a manual from Seloc but it did not show a clear picture of this.

I need to replace the clip that holds this linkage i had to tye-wrap it together because the clip was cracked.

Not sure where to order.

Thanks everyone.
