I have a 80's model 115 Johnson with manual shifting. I have all the power I need in forward, but my reverse is weak. The engine shifts easly into reverse but will not reve (speed) up.
What should I look for? Does my shift or throttle linkage need adjusting?
I did a search the last few nights but did not find anyone with a similar problem.

Thanks In advance.

Howdy, PY.

Look for an adjustable throttle block in Neutral and Reverse. It is there to prevent over-revving.

Good luck, and welcome aboard. :)

JB where would this block be located? Are you refering to a screw stop of some sort?

Thanks in advance. I think I have stumbled on a great forum!

How weak is weak PY? Won't get the revs you get in forward. But should be enough to pull the rig off a trailer. What kind of RPMs are you talking?

Not many RPMs. It will bearly back up my boat! And if I have to back against any current or try and back off the beach it is nearly impossible.

How far back will the control lever go in reverse? Problem may lie in the control box itself.

The problem was in my shift control box. A plastic bushing of some sort was broken. I got it fixed for 48 bucks! I have not yet put it in the water but running on land I can tell the difference.

I wouldn't run it on land too much. It's hard on the prop, unless it's real sandy soil.
