Hi I still have no spark and was wondering if the ignition switch was shorted out, would the starter motor still cranck over or should I be looking at bigger problems ie the power pack joe mentioned. Thanks harve

Stick with one thread, please. What was the other one so we can catch up without repeating what has already been said?

Re: 115 johnson

Hi again, I have replaced the ignition switch but the problem remains. the starter cranks over but there is no spark. Is the power pack my next thing to replace, if I take the power pack to a marina can they check this to see if it needs replacing (power pack 4 - 581895 k4c) I would apreciate any help on this as I am new to this. Thanks :D

Harve.... Apparently you did not grasp what I had to say in my previous post.<br /><br />I said after explaining to disconnect the red plug, remove the spark plugs, then cranking the engine to check for spark:<br /><br />"If you now have spark, in all probability the ignition switch has shorted out. If so, replace it. If you still do not have spark, the usual failure is the powerpack."<br /><br />To which you replied:<br /><br />"Thanks for the advice Joe. No spark so I guess I'll try replacing the ignition switch".<br /> <br />To repeat my last line... If you still DO NOT have spark, the usual cause is the powerpack.<br /><br />You misread what I had to say. Replace the powerpack.

Thanks Joe, being new to this there is lot that I am not grasping so I will replace the power pack. The two ignition coils that have some cracks in them on the right side looking to the prop - is this a problem. Thanks I am slowly catching on :)

Re: 115 johnson

Harve.... Understood. It's very easy to misread things when you're not used to them. Those cracks on the coils are a common thing and usually do not interfere with the running of the engine.<br /><br />However, at night, in a dark area, run the engine and watch the coil area, or simply crank the engine with the s/plugs out. If they're shorting through the crack to ground, it will become very obvious.<br /><br />Purchase a small can of Liquid Neopreme (not liquid electrical tape) at your local automotive parts store, then coat the coils with it. That'll seal the cracks if they're just the normal no problem type cracks.

Re: 115 johnson

I dissagree with Joe on this one....these cracks are not common on a properly running engine. When the epoxy filler cracks, it can allow moisture in, and will. When cracks show up, this would be the "common" time to replace them before the high resistance ruins other ignition components-unless you have plenty of money, and don't mind getting caught in the middle of the lake........OMC-27yrs, McCune Racing, 10yrs+

Re: 115 johnson

Thank you for all the advice, I replaced the power pack with an aftermarket Sierra (all had in stock) and the motor started right up. Thanks again. The tach at full speed is at about 4500 and 45 mph on a 16 ft Grew SS-160. Does this sound about right? harve

Re: 115 johnson

Harve....max rpm on yer' 115 is 5500rpm. However, running at 53krpm is a good idea. You may not have a motor issue here. May be a prop issue. If you are not real familiar with timing the engine, get a manual. What you do not want to do is lug the engine. This is just as bad as running it hot.<br /><br />Make sure the sycn and link is correct, the high end timing is correct. Don't know if you have checked compression lately, but this would also be a good thing to do. Make sure the engine is in top shape before turning to the prop.
