I just purchased a 1985 Merc 115HP. It has been sitting for a year. Cleaned carbs. Cranked right up and sounds great, but I'm getting oily foam out of the right exhaust port. It was on it's side for about 5 hours. Could gear oil get up there from sitting on its side that long? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What colour is the oily discharge? If it's dark it's just oil if its lighter in colour suspect leaky gear case seals.Check the gear case lube for signs of water.

Foaming at the port huh? I'd say it had rabies :D
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Gear lube can leak-past the pump's diriveshaft and shifter seals. And in theory, yes, it could precievably mix with coolant water expelled in the exaust and foam-up.
Many times and engine can dump the contenst of the carbs and recirculator system into the block. Maybee some rain water got into it?
But I would drain/inspect the L/U, and if clean, refill with new vent/fill screw gaskets, as SoS sugjested..
Also, if clean, check the compression every cylinder, as it could have a leaking head or exaust port plate gasket. Check the plugs, as a brand new looking one amounst normal looking ones, would indicate a steam-cleaned plug (ungood).
If the all plugs look normal, as opposed to having one or two that looked like they havent been installed yet---and the compression test passes on all jugs--and the L/U lube looked clean, you can safely decide your motor is ready to rock.
Good luck on all counts.

Thanks guys. The discharge is silver in color. I will drain the gear lube. If there is water in it, is it gear seals for sure?
