Have a 95 model 115 v4 Johnson , 90 degree, carburated, model J115TLEO.Motor performed flawlessly except for cold natured at startup,
"sneezing", would die three or four times before it would run. After motor ran for three to four minutes, ran perfect remainder of day, would start and idle first crank.Three different mechanics told me not to worry they were just cold natured. Then one day after stopping to fish for about an hour, hard to start and did not want to idle and wanted to "fall on its nose" when accelerated hard. Finally managed to get her up on plane ,ran fine high speed back to dock. Took her to a certified Johnson mechanic,Told him to go over it with a fine tooth comb, wanted it fixed right. He told me all it needed was the timing advanced. Did not sound right to me but I thought I would try it.Next trip more cold natured than ever,Idled about 1400 rpm (use to idle 900)otherwise ran fine. I felt it had to clunk to hard to go in too gear at this Rpm,was not happy with it and took it back to him.Ask
him to adjust with the motor submerged so their
would be back pressure, ask him if it was recirc
lines(learned that here)and reset timing back and reduce idle. When I picked it up he said he "re-jeted" the low speed jets bigger for more fuel at idle. When I got home took off the cowling and noticed timing nut still in same position on adjustment rod.Have not ran it yet, love this motor, any of this sound right? I am skeptical. Thought it was important to relate whole story. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: 115 v4 fixed correctly?

hello
find another tech
if you make the idle jets bigger on that engine you allow more air and less fuel making that motor leaner. sounds like a complete tune up including a carb job may be needed now. but first have the do a spark and compression test.
to many techs imediatly start wrenching without testing or looking. I got burned on that once a long long time ago. now if there is any running complaint I spark and compression or leakdown test it first. saves us all a lot of hassle.
good luck and keep posting

A possibility is the idle air jets. Had the same problem on an 88spl. Didn't want to start and stay idling. After warm up, was fine. Did the whole thing, as rodbolt suggested. Still the same. Dropped the idle jets down two sizes and it was fine. Just a suggestion but I would go the route rodbolt suggested first.

Good Luck.

There is a neat feature here with the red search at the top of the page. Go there & enter "sneezing" & see like problems & suggested solutions.

Sneezing is plain and simple Idle circut too lean.
As suggested above, the idle air bleed jets need to be smaller allowing more fuel-less air.
I've fought this at altitude, but I have to go the other way...most of the time we're too rich, which causes the engine to "slowly" slow down, load-up and die, but no sneezing.
RB has a good point about checking comp. too, and as solittle stated, there is some good reading on this issue using the search function.

Re: 115 v4 fixed correctly?

Thanks to all of you for the advice, what about
the timing ? And you have me wondering now maybe I misunderstood , he said he rejetted it to
a smaller numbered jet , I said " and that will give it more fuel",he responded yes , I assumed
a smaller number was a larger size hole in the fuel jet, maybe he did mean the air jet.Sorry for posting in the wrong place, intended to post in Johnson problems , my first time. Just found this forum the other day , have learned a lot.

J/E uses thousndths of an inch for jet size and number is directly related to size.
If your engine has low speed fuel jets, he done wrong, if it has idle bleed air jets, he went the right way.....I'll look in my books and see if I can tell what your idle circut is and post back.

From what I see in the book, you have Idle bleed air jets (orfices) so he done it right if he installed lower numbered jets.

Re: 115 v4 fixed correctly?

Would sure appreciate it. Heard these were good
motors ,want to fix it right.I have had this boat and motor one year but have had her out
at least 30 times, has been a jewel except for
the cold start and that one time I mentioned which initiated the trip to the shop. Its on a
Ranger sport R70 and was a one owner before I bought it , boat and motor look new.
