115 Yamaha - Flaky Oil Light

The engine is a 2000 Yamaha 115HP two-stroke V4, number 115TXRY, GE5 X 73082 T. There is a ?low oil? light and a ?high temperature? light on the dash.

In general the motor starts up and runs fine. However . . .

The low oil light eliminates intermittently. Additionally the motor will loose power once in a while for no apparent reason. (no alarm) The oil light can be on and the motor will still run fine. I?ve noticed the loss of power happens more often when I shut off the motor and start up again (picking up a skier). I?ve checked the oil level switch on the motor and it seems to be working properly, I can turn on and of the oil light by lifting the switch assembly up and down. If the oil light is already on however, and I lift and lower the switch the light stays on. It will go off by itself if I run the motor for a bit. There?s plenty of oil in both reservoirs so my suspicion is a fuel line problem. But why the light issue?

The high temperature light has not illuminated.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 115 Yamaha - Flaky Oil Light

have you checked the filter in the remote tank? if its clogged the engine can consume oil faster than the transfer can occur.
by "lights on the dash" I have to assume its not rigged with Yamaha rigging.
you may wish to correctly rig the dash with the correct yamaha guage package that has low remote level indicate, overheat and low engine tank indicators.
if the remote is low or the sensor or wiring is bad automatic transfer wont occur.
when you toggle the manual switch what is the level of oil in the engine tank and remote tank ?

Re: 115 Yamaha - Flaky Oil Light

Thanks for getting back Rodbolt. Yes I checked the filter and it looked OK. At one point when the motor lost power I immediately popped the top to check the oil level and it was actually a little above the high indication mark. It could be a squirrelly switch but I would have thought that if it was the switch then when the warning light activated it would always go into the low rpm safety mode, but that doesn?t happen constantly. The light can come on and the motor will still run fine.

It?s interesting that you mention the gauge package. The boat is a Hurricane deck boat and the light package is clearly how it was manufactured. However, when I look in the manual there should be three lights, as you say. This had me confused because I wasn?t sure I was looking at the right diagram. Re-wiring sound?s pretty ugly but I?ll look into that further.

I have used the toggle switch to re-fill the tank, but that was just a check. The level was about half-way and I just filled to the top indicator. I?ve never seen the oil in tank on the motor low. The remote tank is half full.

For now I think I?m going to try a couple of simple things like changing the fuel pump and filter (I have to clean the carberator anyway, sticky needle).

Re: 115 Yamaha - Flaky Oil Light

as Yamaha Outbaord Marine failed to also manufacture your hull they cannot control how its rigged.
lights are ok, I guess, but not a real subsitute for the correct stuff, just a lot cheaper.
holds the production cost down that is then passed on to the consumer( yea right :) )
anyway if the switch is setting the light it has to go through the oil control module which will also set RPM reduction if above 2500 RPM.
you will also get an audible if its wired correctly.

Re: 115 Yamaha - Flaky Oil Light

I?ll get some time with it this weekend and I?ll trace the wiring out and look for any other cost saving measures. I?ve never heard that alarm sound (I presume it?s the horn and I know that works). When I was testing the light I didn?t have the motor on, just the power, so I?m not sure that would set of the horn. I can try it again with the motor reving in neutral to try and activate the circuit by pulling up the oil level switch.

Again, thanks for the help.
