115 Yamaha Intermittent Oil Warning

I have a year 2000 Yamaha 115HP ? V6 - 2 Stroke. The low oil safety mode intermittently activates. No horn just the indicator light on the dash aluminates and the motor rpm limit activates. Both oil reservoirs are at least half full. I had the shop check the wiring and they replaced one wire but it didn?t change the problem. They also changed the controller, that seemed to work for a little while but the problem came back. Could I be a bad level switch in one of the tanks, if so how do I check that? Also, is there any way to override this in a pinch?

Re: 115 Yamaha Intermittent Oil Warning

is it a V4 or a V6? very different control modules.
the switch in the remote tank simply alerts the operator that the remote is low and inhibits automatic oil transfer. has nothing to do with any alarms or RPM reduction.
have you actually tested the horn for proper operation?
when was the last time the oil filter in the remote tank was replaced ?

Re: 115 Yamaha Intermittent Oil Warning

Hey Rodbolt, thanks for getting back.

Sorry, the engine is a V4, there is just a single warning light on the dashboard. The motor oil filter is new (and checked). Oil flow seems to be OK; I’ve check the level in the inner reservoir right after the motor went into safety mode and the level was OK. I have not checked the horn (buzzer). The motor will run fine for days then suddenly go into this mode, some times it’s just temporary and will run fine again after I slow it down, other times it sticks and I’ll have to shut it down for a while. Could it be a bad temperature switch?

Re: 115 Yamaha Intermittent Oil Warning

Hi,

No, there is just a single light mounted separately on the dash.

After reading some earlier similar posts I?m getting a bit suspicious of the fuel line (no buzzer sound). Could a bad primer bulb cause these symptoms? I have noticed it?s hard to start cold, that wasn?t the case last year. When the engines warm it starts fine.

I don?t normally have to prime the engine however, when I tried, the bulb remained soft. Sound?s like I should replace that first then re-start the troubleshooting sequence.

Thanks.

Re: 115 Yamaha Intermittent Oil Warning

Update: I replaced the fuel bulb and got very good pressure when I pumped it. I tried starting the boat cold again with no luck. I then checked the Fuel Enrichment Solenoid and noted that it was not activating. I replaced it and tried again. After a few tries the motor started and ran fine. I left it running for 15-20 minutes reving up the rpm and it did not go into the safety mode, however, the ?low oil? light did stay illuminated. I shut off the engine and let it cool for about an hour to re-test the cold start. It re-started fine; I think between the new bulb and enrichment valve I solved the cold start problem. However, I cannot get that ?low oil? light to shut off and because this was an intermittent problem before I fear that the engine will go into the low rpm mode later. I won?t have it on the water for a couple of weeks so I have some time to try a few things.

Some clarification to the engine specs: The engine is a 2000 Yamaha 115HP two-stroke V4, number 115TXRY, GE5 X 73082 T. There is a ?low oil? light and a ?high temperature? light on the dash. The high temperature light has not illuminated. The warning horn works.

Any thoughts of maybe my missing a re-set button or something? I did flip the witch on the oil control module but the low oil light stayed on.
