Need info on how to replace the bearing on the drive shaft. I have lots of play up and down and the shaft moves sideways. I see the roller bearings and they are loose in the case. The water pump pic is all I found of the water pump. The picture of the bearing on the shaft is the one I need to remove. Think I should replace the water pump:D.

Tex, Some of those bearings depend on a preload pin, or the waterpump base to push them into race properly. If you push down on the driveshaft, does the looseness disappear? Same question when the waterpunp base is installed.

When I push down on the shaft the looseness does disappear. There is a shim under the water pump base and I assume when I reinstall the water pump bass this will solve the problem. Thank you. Now I need to buy the gasket and o-ring seal for the water pump base. This was good experience for me. Now I know what is under that water pump base. This is my first try at working on an outboard motor. Thanks for all your help.

Check your year model as a 1987 does not use shims under water pump ad is non preload as uses upside down bearing....

I found the year model stamped on the motor and I also looked up the serial number on another sight and it came out to be 1978.The shim is just a thin metal washer that lays on top of the bearing and the lower water pump housing sits on top of it or a least I think that is what it is. That is where I found it. I am new to the outboard mechainc world so I am learning as I go and I documented all the parts as I removed them. Do I need this part. Do you think someone add this at one time. This boat and motor was given to me.
