Throttle at idle this is where #1 sparks. I can’t seem to make up a fraction of that distance with the adjustment screw. I’m thinking I need tonset it where it should spark, pull off the belt, align and put back on. (Distributor recently rebuilt and all markings were aligned)

Fact , timing at idle does not matter.-----The point where throttle plates open does matter.-----Maximum timing advance is what you adjust / set.

As was stated, idle timing is not important, however, it will be less than 4*BTDC. You simply back throttle down until motor idles at about 900RPM in neutral.

Idle pickup timing is set using the brass collar about 1/2 way up the distributor body. Is that how you are setting it? Idle pickup timing should be 4-6* BTDC. Max timing s/b 21* BTDC.

Primary pickup set to 4, max advance is 20. I have to pull the belt to get more out of it. I ran out of adjustment. Runs really well but started flooding so I shut her down.

4* primary pickup is fine. However, sometimes when installing the timing belt, it looks to be 1/2 tooth off. You can turn the pulley 1/2 tooth to see if see idles better.

"Pull the belt" What is that?

Take the belt off and realign. It may be a tooth off which would explain why I ran out of room to adjust. It’s running great so far though. Adjusted the mixture roughly. Will finish in the water.

There are 24 teeth on the wheel, as I remember. Setting one tooth off means 15 deg off.
You still can have the same idle performance, but you have to adjust everything off 15 deg to get the correct idle. And in that case, the idle adjust screw looks very weird, because it is too long(or short, I forget) .

I did compare this before, run with 1 tooth off for a whole month, all the timing set is correct, but only except for the idle screw.
Setting 1 tooth back to normal, every adjust looks normal too.

My specific way on my model, 1977 1150 is. Align the wheel, pulley and 3 dots to a line. There is a bump dot on the edge of pulley to match with the bump dot on the powerhead, matching them means you have 1 tooth off. Turn the pulley clockwise 1 tooth. This only works for me, I don't know other models.

Gee, you should never be any more than 1/2 tooth off. Cast arrow on top of distributor pulley should point at dot (or 3 dots) on timing decal.
