has anyone sucessfully converted the 115 to the 140? i know that this has been discussed before but noone has said if it actually works or is just a waste of time and money.. the boat i bought has the dt115 and at this time i feel that its underpowered. if this conversion is possible i would like to try it.. I also realize that it may shorten the life of the 115 as well.. any comments?? i know where i can get a set of carbs and oil injectors cheap right now.. If anyone has done this let me know..

It won't shorten the life. The same block is used for both engines. You'll need carbs, intakes, and O/I pump. If it exceeds the power your boat's rated for, any close examination by marine police, or insurance investigators if there's a fatality, will put the problem right into your lap.

The 140 has a larger displacement. Doesn't this mean boring the block and putting in new pistons?

the whole motor is basically exactly the same, you'll have to change the carbs, reeds .....

There is no "the" 115 or "the" 140.

If you are talking about the DT115 and DT140, say so. Some think you are talking about the DF115 and DF140.

Re: 115hp-140hp suzi

Yes, I have converted a DT115 to a DT 140, successfully. I got the 115 at 2200hours, ran it until 3500 hours. Bored 0.5mm, installed 140 carbs, intakes, plastic reeds, 140 O/I pump, ran it until approximately 5000 hours, traded it for a SS 150. The longevity of an engine depends on YOU. If you use after-market oils (or oils by folks who are not in the outboard business) then you can look at a shortened engine lifetime. If you run your engine W-O-T and load it by not coming close to its operating range with too great a prop pitch, you'll have limited engine lifetime. If you don't service it regularly, you'll limit your engine's life. I've been working on Suzukis since 5/79, and have seen those that died a premature life, and those that exceeded expectations. The DT115/140 block is solid, and converting from 115 to 140 will not hurt the block. If you treat it properly, you can get the same lifetime out of it that I did.

i guess i thought the intakes, bore sizes and reeds were the same between the 115 and the 140? what else would there be to change?

Re: 115hp-140hp suzi

If you look at 115 carbs, their bolt-on pattern is perfectly horizontal. The 140 has LARGER carbs, necessitating a 45-degree bolt pattern. The engine bore is identical, but the carb bore is different. I switched to Boynsen reeds to give me a better hole shot and top end. The only things you HAVE to change for the PROPER conversion are:
1. Carbs
2. Intakes
3. Oil injection pump

Ok.. Thats what I was thinking.. Thanks for the info though... Looks like I will have to locate a used intake to go along with this conversion.. this looks like something I can do in a weekend or so when its raining.. I suppose it will have to be retuned to follow the bigger carbs and such as well.. Is there any change to the timing or anything else I need to be concerned with?? Thanks for all the great info already..

I hope this response isn't considered a thread hijack. You guys are talking about the 2-stroke but can the 4-stroke apply this 115 - 140 conversion?

Thanks,
Andy

not sure if it will work on the 4 stroke.. you will have to compare the parts list to make sure of the differences.

Re: 115hp-140hp suzi

Reply #3 above applies to the 4 stoke engines.

Thanks. So to recap, the 2-Stroke 115 and 140 share the same bore and stroke while the 4-Stroke 115 and 140 do not share the same bore and stroke. Dang, too bad for that one. :(
