I have a chance to buy a pair of late model 115's for next to nothing, but they have 4,000 hours on them, are they worth rebuilding? should I just use them untill they just crap out? or forget the whole thing? I can get them for $2,000 for the pair (trade in offered) the dealer said he will just onsell them to a wrecker for parts, they are still running really well and have been serviced at Yamaha suggested intervals by a reputable dealer, is there any reason to buy them? and is a rebuild an option a them?

A runner plus a parts motor? What the heck! I would. Do you need both or just one? Run the best, use the other for parts. Have them checked for compression and leakdown. Pick the healthiest one.

they are still in operation on a commercial boat, I will need both if I go ahead, the owner said they use about 1 litre (1 quart) of oil a month at the hours he does, but they are still both running perfectly (I went for a run on the weekend) I guess I could just buy them, fit them up and see how long they go for, they would still be worth the money for parts I would think.

What a deal! I don't see how you can lose, Noel.

Modern 4 stroke engines go 4,000 hours without a peep in automobiles.

Assuming they pass leakdown they are probably good for another 2,000 hours, which is several years of recreational use.

I am with JB.if they run well and pass aleakdown and the gear case oil shows no defects take a chance, the early runs had issues with leaking oilpumps but by 4000 hours thats not an issue here.
to actually rebuild one, unless you do it yourself, is cost prohibitive.
the cranks cannot be ground and so far only 1 oversize piston is avalible. last I looked the pistons were only sold as a piston/rod assy and were fairly pricey.
if you follow all the steps you will assemble/dissasemble the motor about 5 times before final assy.
the head bolts and crankcase main bearing bolts are NOT reuseable.
but its usually a rock solid motor that if maintained doesnt give many problems.
