got a 115hp 95 johnson and was trawling at 1500rpm for about 8 hours with a few short engine switch offs an a few 3000-5000rpm stints, running ok. suddenly engine switched off (whilst at 1500rpm) i thought i ran out of fuel so i refilled, would'nt restart as usual so i tried choke, just started an barely ran, nor could i keep it running but whilst going billowed smoke heavily. any ideas on cause? few notes:#1 carby heavily oiled up after removing airbox for inspection. #2 noticed i seemed to use at least double normal amount of oil for that trip compared to normal. #3 motor taken fair few cranks to start since ive owned boat (12 months). #4 always been smokeir than should be on cold starts. #5 runs bit claggy but fine wen warmed up and restarts fine within apx 12 of last being started. sorry for the novel folks :/ .brent.

Re: 115hp 95 johnson billowing smoke

Is this engine a crossflow or a looper? OMC made both in 1995. On the crossflow, the combination fuel/oil pump should it's suction from the #4 cylinder. Check the suction line for oil. There is an airbox drain hose which also connects to #4 cylinder. If the carbs leak fuel, that excess is recirculated into #4 and can cause poor running and excess exhaust smoke.

i believe its a crossflow, wedge top style pistons. learning a lot about outboard engine schematics quite quickly after a lot of coffee an research lol. what do u think of ditching the VRO system an going back to premixing? seems the majority of articles ive read most people really dont like VRO. tuesday just gone i got stuck 45km offshore drifting further out and dont want to be in such a position again, thank god for the coastgaurd. i now believe this was due to fuel leakage causing extreme oil usage

That would be a rash way to deal with a fuel leak.

If you disconnect the VRO and have another fuel leak on one cyl you'll melt a piston.
