Hey guys, i'm from sydney australia and i've just bought a Pride ski runabout boat with an old blue line distributor model straight 6 mercury motor.
The trim/tilt pump/motor sits in the baot at the back separate from the outboard.
The guy who i bought the boat off says the last time he used the boat everything worked fine but the boat has been sitting for about 18 months unused and now when i press the trim/tilt up button, nothing happens and when i press the tilt/trim button down, it just clicks.
can anyone help me with suggestions on what the problem here is?
should i just buy a whole new pump unit or could it be an easier fix?
thanks
ryan

Bexi, See my other post.

Thar trim motor will be expensive to replace, if you can get it.

Lets try to fix yours. First of all, the blue lead on the motor should have +12V power when you are trying to trim or tilt up, the green wire should have +12V when you are trying to tilt down. The black wire to the motor is always grounded. Check these. On that tilt unit, the solenoid is only for up. If it only clicks connect some battery power directly to the blue wire on the solenoid. If the PTT motor runs, you have a bad solenoid or wiring harness. If not, you may have a bad motor. There is a bi-metal overload (think circuit breaker) inside the motor, which can get stuck open. You might check it out.

BTW - fill the pump resvoir with 5W-30 motor oil, unless it already has transmision fluid, which is a newer replacement fluid.

Re: 115hp Mercury Outboard trim/tilt problem

Awesome news thatnks to everyone here!
I took out the armeture and put it in a cordless drill, put some wet and dry on the contacts to clean them up and a razor blade to clean the slots. also gave the brushes a bit of a light sand then cleaned it all with contact cleaner.
put it all back together and ..... it bloody works!
i'm stoked!
I have a black button on my hand controller which lowers the tilt and a red button which is supposed to lift it. the red button does nothing.
I also have a trailor button on my hand controller box which does now lift the tilt. not sure why the red button doesn't work but i don't really care either coz i can use the trailor button.
thank you guys so much for all the help.
Now i just have to change the water pump and get water pumping through again and free up the steering a bit.
Is there any website which goes through the steps of changing the water pump or is there somewhere on this website?
