Hi Folks,
Have a 1994 Whaler Jet with inboard 115HP OMC. Everyone tells me it is same top end as Johnson/Evinrude 115, so I posted this here. ;)

Problem: No tac and no charging
Answer: I purchased a manual, but wanted some up-front info since it is not here yet. If the motor runs great, but no tac and no charging (0-volts out to battery), is most likely problem rectifier or stator? I know everyone ultimately says get a manual and follow troubleshooting, but I was wondering if I can drive home after work and do a 2-minute (fisherman's time, really means 2-hours) check to see if it is the rectifier or stator?

Thanks to all for your help.

You can check the stator with an ohmmeter real quick. If it is OK, chances are your regulator is shot. The flywheel had to be removed to replace the $78 part.

Most of the time, regulator failure is due to wing nuts on the battery allowing intemittent connections while running. Use lockwashers and hex nuts tighttened with a wrench.

Good point on the preventative maintenance of nuts vs. wingnuts !......... :)

Thanks folks. As it turns out (and you already guessed), the boat has stinkin wingnuts on the battery!

How do I check the stator, and is there an easy and quick way to check the rectifier? Seahorse mentioned the regulator, but did you really mean the rectifier?

Thanks!
JimIslander

Jim.....the rectifier/regulator is a package deal. What ya' need to do is get a service manual for the engine. It'll tell ya' all you need to know about testing the charging system. The manual will pay for itself many times over. You can get one from any Johnny/Rude dealer.

Hello All,

Got a SELOC manual. Haven't taken the time yet to troubleshoot, as the Reds are really biting in Charleston (using a car charger between trips). Thanks for all the advice.

Mike

In reading your question, it appears that you are getting no charge or turnover, as neither am I. I have wingnuts on my battery. Are you saying that the battery wingnuts can short out the regulator and no start the motor?

Most folks tighten the wingnuts with their fingers and they loosen up causing intemittent connections. Those intermittents cause voltage spikes that ruin a regulator and/or rectifier. Even tightening wing nuts with pliers, they still come loose without lockwashers.

That motor has a combo regulator/rectifier on the back top of the cylinder block.
