115HP V4 Lower Unit Seals How hard to replace?

Have an '82 johnnyrude 115 and the lower unit lube came out milky when I changed it this spring. Put fresh lube in it and will run it a few hours for the holiday weekend. I imagine it'll get by for a short time. How hard is the lower unit seal job? Do I need special tools such as a press etc? On the other hand anyone have an idea how much someone would charge to do the job? It might be worth it for me to buy a rebuilt one instead. I see them on e-bay from $350 - 500.

Very good chance it could just be your drain/vent screw O-rings so don't get too worked up yet..... Drain it, fill it, replace the O-rings, make sure they are good and tight, run it a bit and see where you're at.

I agree with ezmobee, drain the lower unit and refill with fresh oil using new washers on the drain/vent screws. Run it a time or two and recheck the oil for water.

I just did a 95 115.....the other seals are the drive shaft seal and the prop shaft seal, those are th emain deals that might be bad. then you have the shift rod seal and the drain plug seals.


the book has all kinds of "special" tools you need to use.....but you really dont....then i think they are using different style seals than previous designed...insterad of two seals back to back, they are making a single seal that seals both ways...

if you didnt know it, you might think you got the wrong seal!!!
