I was talking to a VFW comrade of mine regarding a couple outboard motors I was recently able to repair (thanks to some help from others on this forum, thank you.). He said I caould have an old Elgin motor he had stored for the last 30 years. It's a 12 hp 2 cylinder. He stores it properly. I was able to get it to sputter and run for a second or two, but that's all. I removed the carb, cleaned it and replaced it. It looks fine. I checked the diaphragm and it is very stiff. After the carb change, it's still the same. I have gotten it to run for 10 to 20 seconds but only if I butterfly the throttle. It is pumping water fine and it is not overheating. I am sure it's the fuel pump.

I guess my question is, where can I find the serial number so I can order some parts if any are available. There are part numbers all over the thing, but I cannot find a serial number.

If I can get it running reliably, is there any special value to this motor?

Re: 12 HP Elgin

After reading a couple other posts, I found the serial number on the tiller. I have attached a photo of the tag.

Where can I go for parts.

Thanks,

If it is the pump you may be able to get it to run by continuing to squeeze the primer bulb.Is the tank vent open?
I believe that is a 57 built by West Bend.Became Chrysler circa 65,became Force circa 85. Its possible early Chryslers share parts. You might try the Chrysler crew for parts and info. It appears it is not a 3 line pump but if no luck finding one you could probably adapt it to a 3 line pump.
You might ask at www.aomci.org someone may know of parts or a replacement.

Any suggestions on where to go from here then? If I pump the bulb, the motor will start and run for 20 to 30 seconds. If I continue to pump the bulb after start, it doesn't help it to run any longer.

How far out should I turn the mix screws on the front of the carb?
