I just aquired a 12 HP Sea King........this motor appears to be very old, I'm guessing mid 60's. Looks like the small evinrudes of the time. Appaerently it run good until about 2 years ago then started missing. The owner replaced it at that time and it's been sitting since........price was right (free) and I thought it might be a good project motor. The model is GG-9016A and serial number is 45X563522...........any idea of the year? Anyone familier with this motor?.....Thanks!.....

1954-55, same as Gale 12D11. Many parts are common with similar Johnson/Evinrudes of the same age. The best part is that the magneto parts are still readily available. The bad news is that little else is.

In my after market service manual the 12D11 is covered in the same section as the 15 & 18 E/J.Pretty sure your motor shares Carb, ign&mpeller parts with
the E/J motors.Availablehere at iboats 18-7043 carb kit,18-7094 needle
and seat,
Coil 18-5181,18-3002 impeller,18-3203 kit,18-3377 pump kit less housing.
Points 18-5156,points 18-5199,tune up kit 18-5006.

Thanks for the responses. before i went to too much effort i sprayed some starter fluid in the carb and gave it a pull. fired on the second pull so looks like i've got spark and compression..........pulled the carb and will go through that tomorrow........nice to know some parts are available............again, thanks for the responses.............

Unless they have already been replaced, it has cracked coils. They always do. You are wasting your time till you check them out.

Read the Awakening a Sleeping Outboard thread in the FAQ forum. Follow that procedure...parts are available, just have to know where to look. Do have a look at the coils/points/etc.

Re: 12 HP Sea King???

thanks everyone for the information....i visually checked the coil, they appear to have been replace, they don't look like the ones in the pic from FR. They are light green in color and appear to be made of some type of plastic and at least look new.........any one know the correct fuel/oil ratio? Thanks!!

Re: 12 HP Sea King???

Might have originally been 16:1, but the Gale factory service manual says 24:1. Don't be cheating and making it still thinner. That motor has silver plated connecting rods that are fine, but cannot stand rust.

Re: 12 HP Sea King???

ok, followed all advice on this thread (thanks!!!!) and fired her up today. after adjusting the slow needle, got her starting and running good at low speed. Can't do hight speed yet since it's running in a can. Seems to run real good, lots of water in the eshaust and cylinders stay nice and cool...............next step is to put her in the inflatable dinghy and run her and adjust the high speed needle...........only concern is the oil build up in the can.....mixed 24:1 as suggested but seems to smoke some and leave an oily ring in the can. Do you think i could go with a good synthetic MC oil and increase the ratio???? Sea trial coming in a day or two so stay tuned............and thanks again for the input.........the Reeves carb adjustment FAQ saved the day..............Im surprised a 53 year old OB can run so sweet...............THANKS.

Re: 12 HP Sea King???

Don't be alarmed about the smoke and oil in the bucket. That's normal and won't be so noticeable once you get it on a boat. I do recommend 100% Synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil for less smoke, but don't cheat on the 24:1 mix.

You didn't ask, but those motors have a problem with the lower main bearing crankshaft seals. They are crap. And when they fail they let water into the crankcase. The first indication you will have is a thrown connecting rod. It is wise to change the seal whether it needs it or not. Or just let it go, I have a spare rod you can get.

Thanks FR, I'm going to put it on the boat and see how it runs. If all is good, I will check and change the seal. Do you know if the seal is available? Thanks again....

It is available. I've replaced so many of them that I know the part number by heart. 303804.

Re: 12 HP Sea King???

Update......finaly got the sea king on the inflatable dinghy yesterday. Had trouble getting on plane without cavitating.......improvised and made a tiller extension from 1.5" PVC and tried again with my weight further forward...........Still cavitates if I apply throttle to fast but otherwise...WOW. This motor really moves this 9 foot inflatable........the boat is rated for 9.9hp and this is a 12 but i don't think it's made 12hp in 40 years. I didn't get a chance to adjust the high speed jet because full throttle is TOO FAST to turn around...!! Think I'll just leave it at the 1 turn out starting position. Thanks again for the advice on this thread..............
