Use an exterior grade spar urethane to seal your wood with, poly is useless without glass mat.

4 coats of spar urethane should give you good service for quite a few years.

^ thanks for the tip, im about to go to home depot to look at what they have. what about wood putty to fill my test holes? And a wood stain that would make the grain look nice?

Coming along nicely, should have it back in the water in no time. Good work and nice job on the crack.

Still working on sealing the wood, It takes a while to dry in between coats. Whay are your thoughts about not replacing the foam compartments and building a brace on each side of transom to the side of the hull where there is a "structure rib" ? My keybord is on the frits so im going to leave it at that for now.

Now that im half way through sealing the wood im worried that it might really be teak and im messing it up by sealing it.? Pics being down dose not really help with my timing. And my backspace key no longer works, Great!

Hi MWG 2600. The SS should be ok. While it is a dissimilar metal from the aluminum, they have a fairly low galvanic reaction rating. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one). If you're worried, you can put some 3M 5200, on the back and around the edges to act as an adhesive, sealant, and to reduce contact between the two metals. Beware, if you do use the 5200 in large amounts that plate probably ain't ever coming off, and it can take several days to cure properly, if you don't get the fast drying version. However, the aluminum should be a lot cheaper, easier to get and shape to fit your needs, so you may want to use it for those reasons.

I think i should use 3m 4200 so i can get it back apart if needed, The stainless was free so i cant complain. and its going on the flat back of the transom.

I was looking the boat over today and realized that the keel is not suposta look like this! IMG_0198.jpgIMG_0199.jpgIMG_0200.jpg And there is also another pic of the transom crack, since the old pics are gone. Patches and rivets? I don't think just welding is good enough for the keel? I want to go fishing soon!!!

I am NOT a Tinny buy, but I'm not sure why you think your keel is not supposed to look like that. It appears to be factory rivets to me, but again I am not a tinner so I may be WAY wrong. As for the Transom cap, either take her to a welder for a 2 min welding job or install the transom and grind it out to bevel it and use JB Weld to fill and fair it out. One of the Tinny experts may come along and shoot me down but that's my No-Experience observation

There is a crack through part of the keel. that curved "line" is the crack.

I don't think I would worry about that crack in the keel unless it's through to the hull. Fill it with some water and see if it leaks. If it was my boat, I would weld that thing shut and not worry about it again. I can make a video of how to do this with the aluminum brazing rods and show you how to get it to hold. The brazing rods get bashed once and a while because people struggle with them at times. I welded a crack identical to that on my 14 foot Springbok and haven't had any problems what so ever.

If this would help you, I can make it and post it on Thursday. Work has me in Japan right now but I will be back home Wednesday Night.

Yah, I'm with magmum, I wouldn't sweat that keel plate unless it's through the hull.

For your transom cap, you could clean it up and JB Weld for a shadetree job (which will likely crack again). Or, take it to a welder. Or, grab yourself new alum channel to replace. The piece isn't structural so proceed with whatever route you think would look good.

That crack certainly indicates there is a transom failure though, which you are addressing.

Cheers!:)
