12 or 24 With Same Thrust?

I have to replace my Trolling motor. Currently I have a 12/24 MG. My question is if a 12 volt system has 65lbs. thrust. Why should I buy a 24volt system with the same amount of thrust? It is a little extra money, but if I am not going to get anything extra why pay. Will a 24 volt system run longer? I guess what I am really asking, what is the difference (other than the two batteries and the wiring... )

You'll have to look at the specs but more than likely, the 24 volt motor will use less amp/hours to achieve the same thrust.

Thus it will last longer...... I say go for it, I had the 36v model.

Yup. Higher voltage uses less current to make the same thrust, smaller wire. Two or three batteries then last two or three times as long.

You won't find many trolling motors, if any, providing 65# of thrust on 12V. 55# is about the limit. Likewise, you won't find many , if any, 24V units with thrust ratings 55# and under. So your question is moot. If you need 55# or less it will be 12V. If you need more than 55# you need 24V. The same logic applies to 36V.

The new ones are that way. Now I have a 24V 45#, will a 12V 55# give me the same pulling power?

It's pounds of thrust that determines "pulling power". As long as you have the correct gauge wire supplying the 12 volt, 55# motor, it will outpull the 24 volt model rated at 45#. But, that will come at a price of lower efficiency.

I should add that the prop style will also affect its ability to move the boat. But for the most part, the thrust capability is the main factor.
