I'm thinking of picking up this cooler to plug into the cigarette lighter in the boat. Holds 40 quarts and needs no ice. Can be used for hot or cold. Will it drain the battery too much to use in the boat? The brochere I have on it doesn't say anything about it. Anyone out there got one? Thanks. Mark

they only go about 40* below the outside temp. they work great in air conditioned enviorment. they will kill a battery in no time if vehicle if it is not running.

They don't really cool like ice either. If somethig is already cold it will keep it that way. If it is warm it will take forever to get it cold.

I have one, what was said above is all true. I would not buy one again for what I used mine for. Buy the ice and be done.

Thanks guys. My company gives a 30 year service award. The catalogue they gave me had this thing in it. I couldn't find anything that I really liked, so my wife suggested maybe this would work out in the boat. Guess I'll have to look for something else. The only fishing stuff was a spin cast rig. I have a couple already and don't use either one much. I'm trying to get into the fly fishing thing. It's a nice gesture but not very useful with the stuff they get in the cagalogue. It is mostly watches, clocks and the like. I don't have much use for any of it.

carrotsnapper
The Coleman cooler draws 4 amps per hour. That gives 40 amp-hours for a 10 hour day. or 24 amp hours use for a 6 hour day.Check your battery for amp-hour rating, would not leave you much. Like jimr says, lowers temp 40 degrees , keeps things cooler, but will not cool warm things.
I have one in the back of my van to keep things cool while driving,4 amp is nothing for a car alternator. Be happy, enjoy life. Batavier

They may not be perfect but they beat water logged sandwiches. I use mine at the beach with a 50 watt solar panel, I get cold beer and it runs itself and my radio all day for free. On a boat I would also use a regular cooler but instead of melting ice why not use reuseable freezer pacs. It's way too much trouble to re-aim the solar panel at the sun as the boat moves. By the way, some units have a low voltage warning buzzer and shut off when the battery runs too low.

Well I agree with SlowlySinking.
I bought a very small one that holds like four cans of pop and four sandwiches. Put in the center console of the boat and your good to go all day.
On day trips with the van, truck or car we use a ice chest with reuseable freezer pacs and plug it in to to keep food warn also. Warm meal and cold drinks. Doesnt get any better.
My .02 worth
