Will a 120 1.98 R Outdrive (mercruiser) unknown year, (has lifting eye on cap)bolt to and work on a 1982 3.7 (4cyl)? I think there was mention that the 3.7 was a Alpha 1 gen 2. Thanks

The 3.7 needs a 1.84 ratio. Are you sure its a gen 2 they didn't come around till after the 3.7 was dropped.

Will it bolt on to an alpha?

Ayuh,...

It'll bolt to an Alpha transom assembley,..... But NOT a Gen.II...

The alpha was introduced in '83 and is "interchangable" with the M, R and 1's
The GenII came out in '91 and is completely different.

Have you considered a new drive from SEI?

Re: 120 1.98 R drive

Thankyou, It's an 82 boat so i'm not even sure yet if it's an Alpha he has. His source that told him it was an Alpha gen 2 obviously doesn't know. He'll be over in the morning with his so we can compare/match up drives. Still concerned about the ratio difference though. 1.98 compared to the 1.84. Wondering if a prop change would get it close to be able to use the 1.98 Drive.

Ayuh,...

It'll depend on what prop is there Now...
If it's a 17" prop,.. There's plenty of wiggle room...
If it's a 23,... Probably Not...
It's gonna take a pretty tall pitch to get it Right....

Thanks Bond-o, being an older boat he just wants it usable. It's prob. got an 17 or 21 on it but i'll check in the morning. He's 48 so i dont think he wants to race it. LOL

Since your going back down to the boat, see if you can get the serial number off of the transom assembly. It is possible that it was changed to a GenII at some point.

Yeah i told him unless the boat had an upgrade but unlikely. He said his drive said mercruiser on it only it doesn't say alpha or gen 2, we'll check it out in the morning, he's just bringing the drive over not the boat. HA, Yeah bondo "Throttle pushed to the hull!" I baby my ole 1970 l6 165, bring her up on plain and cruise at about 2300 rpms and she's happy. And i'm happy to make it home. haha! Hell, i'm happy to get up on plain! haha Been doing about a 35 mile trip a week, Weathers getting nasty here on the coast of Maine. One more trip either Fri or Sat, weather permitting. Last trip my side curtain ended up straight out and had to slow to refasten it.
