120 L Drive water in oil

If some one could help. My 89 Bayliner Capri developed an overheating issue recently. I tried replacing the T-Stat, impeller, and flushing the motor. Soon after the motor started running poorly. I quickly removed the spark plugs to find water in all four cylinders. My first thought was to check the head gasket. Upon removing the head and inspecting the gasket, Im not convinced that this is the problem. I am not familiar with this engine(3.0 Force L-Drive) and would really appreciate any advice other than junking the boat. Also from what I can see the pistons and cylinder walls look ok.

It could also be the exhaust cover, or in the case of an L-Drive, the exhaust chamber gasket. Water circulates through the exhaust chamber to cool it down, then is routed to the block to cool it too.

+1 on what PNWboat said. Get a back brace before you start working on that L drive.

Frisky - pnwboat has probably nailed it. Also, when you take off exhaust manifold, check four holes inside dicharge tube. mine were plugged with crap and I pretty sure it was causing my heat issues. Some of the water is discharged thru these holes so it may be a restriction. Hopefully I'll get to try mine this weekend with NO overheat buzzer.

Thanks so much. I have been reading about a possible issue with the exhaust gasket, but dont know enough about the motor. What really gets me is that once I found water in the cylinders(had to drive back to launch ramp) the boat stopped overheating. Maybe a sign of whats wrong. Thanks again.
