I am forced to remove my mercruiser pre-alpha 120 completely due to having to replace my transom wood in my 1977 Starcraft Chieftain. Are there any hints not covered in the manuals that I should know? I am talking things like it looks like it would be a lot easier to install the lower shift cable before I set the engine in place. I know all about the alignment and stuff, but how do you check for a failing coupler? Any advice not covered in a service manual that might save time and aggravation is appreciated. I already have the out-drive removed, I am just looking at the transom plate and engine.

Good thing I know someone with a loader because those Chieftains are a lot taller them they look.

I wish I could afford the upgrade to the 4.3 but that is for another day.

A bad engine coupler does not have flat spots in between the grooves when worn out they get pointed.
