A 1200kg hammerhead shark caught off the coast of northern NSW could become a tourist attraction in Queensland.

Fisherman Claude Williamson caught the 5m monster off Evans Head, south of Lismore, last month but has since sold it to renowned Queensland shark hunter Vic Hislop, the Northern Star reported.

Mr Hislop runs a shark museum in Hervey Bay but would not say whether the monster would be on display.

"I haven?t decided yet what I?m going to do with it," he said.

"I'm going to keep it frozen for now."

With the size indicating the shark is around 40 years old, the beast ate a smaller shark hooked by the fishing boat, getting snared in the process.

Despite its massive size, Mr Hislop has claimed that he has seen hammerhead sharks even bigger.

The species is endangered worldwide but it is not known how many there are in Australia.

Grow some! - Your more likely to get killed towing the boat to the launch then becoming lunch.

Shoot, I wish I woulda paid more attention in class, I forget how to convert metric to standard US weights and measures. Is 1200kg or 5m big or small?

For a ballpark idea, I multiply kg by 2 to get pounds. I know it's supposed to be 2.2, and it's not as precise, but it's easy for non-critical things.

Like for the rough weight of a shark, it's sufficient to know he's over 2400 pounds.... and WAY too big for me!

thats a big one! biggest hammerhead ive seen here in FL was maybe 12ft or so, although ive heard stories of much bigger.

people that dont swim in the ocean because of sharks are irrational. its like never going outside because you might get hit by lightning. i went snorkeling the other day over the same reef where i caught two 6'+ sharks a couple weeks ago. sharks are pretty smart, if the water is clear the chances of getting bitten is slim to none.
