120hp 4cyl water coming from starter/gimbal area

83 searay seville 120 hp 4cyl rec'd this for payment for other work done --i have it running but when hooked to muffs and running, water is coming from back inside bell housing somewhere before i pull i assume there is a frost plug in there ? or something else should be concerned with ? thanks

Yup,they are called core plugs,put in the bronze one. I had the same thing happen to my 140. Mine " lightly" froze,luckily it did not hurt the motor!

i assume there is no way of replacing core plug other than pulling out drive and engine ?

Ayuh,.... That's Correct,... No way to get the flywheel cover, 'n flywheel off otherwise.....

After pulling out drive (alpha) i found what seems to be some kind of restrictor plate ? correct me if i am wrong -- piece was laying next to or behind shift shaft DSC01228.JPG

Ayuh,... It's a piece of the shutters,... Burnt up from a lack of water flow...

I would get new a new one,motor is out anyway,easy to install. They keep water from backing up into the cylinders!.

Here's what you will find more than likely when you pull the engine and remove the flywheel cover:

(And you would have to be VERY lucky in order for there to be no freeze damage).

Here is what I found on my Merc 140 last year, I had the same symptoms. I had to pull the motor out and draw off the flywheel. Make sure the new plug is Bronze as my supplier sent me a steel one first off! Once the new plug is installed you will need to inspect the block carefully for cracks, you should really pressure test it too. I did and luckily mine was not cracked, but it had froze!
