125 force - trim goes down but not up

My trim will work fine going down but it doesnt work at all going up.

You can not even hear the trim motor when pressing the switch to up.

Are there 2 different motors, one for up and one for down?

Any idea what the problem is or where I should look?

Thanks,

Mike

year?

i'll assume 1988 or later. then it's probably a relay.

Re: 125 force - trim goes down but not up

I need help too!!!

1st Day out today with my new to me 20' pontoon with a 1995 Force 70hp.

Had a great day until my wife came aboard late day and jinkx'ed my vessel!!! I swear everything worked fine until she showed up!!!

1st--- thing that happened was the trim would not go up, only down.
2nd-- thing 5 minutes later, the starter bendix would not go all the way up to greet the flywheel.
3rd---After the, "Won't start scare"...I make back to the boat ramp, get in my truck and the surge brakes are locked up on the trailer!!!!

I think my trim up problem might be in the switch or a relay.
Hopefully others will chime in to let, "forexsystemresearch" and me, with more info on how to go about fixing this.

There are 2 relays inside the motor cowling for the trim unit
One for up
One for down
Try swapping them and see if it goes up

Re: 125 force - trim goes down but not up

The year of my motor is an 1989 force 125. I had a feeling it was a relay or a fuse as if the motor was bad I wouldnt think it would work up or down.

If I am looking at the boat from behind, where is the relay located and could you describe what it looks like?

Thanks a bunch.

When your in the boat looking at the motor, the relays should be on the right front. Two seperat relays, next to each other. In other threads in the past, some people have luck changing or swapping out the one relay to make it work. Others have to change both at the same time. This happened to me on a fishing trip and I was able to switch the wires to make it do what I wanted at the time. up/down

i'd be checking battery cables & connections before relays. you have multiple symptoms that could be traced back to corroded connections or weak battery .... tempermental trim relays, starter not engaging, engine starting problems ... the lowest common denominator is low voltage.

Re: 125 force - trim goes down but not up

I switched the relays and my motor now tilted up but not down, so I've got a new relay coming by mail, problem fixed! ;)

I actually matched up a automotive relay from autozone, brought it home to try it and it worked, but it does not have a waterproof housing, so I'll return it or maybe just keep it aboard as a spare quick fix if another relay craps out on me again one day on the water.;)

that's great news. It's always nice to hear that the $10 fix does the job. You do realize that you've still got something going on with starter, right?

I had the same problem happen three months ago. Stop in at an Auto Parts store and was able to find a replacement.
