125 force water pump location?

I recently bought a 16.5' Randall Craft bass boat with a force 125 engine(finally got my first boat:D). The mechanic at the marina where I bought it had stated that they were not sure how long the boat had set up prior to them getting it. And suggested that I needed to change the water pump. Well we put it in the water and started the engine it run out great, no water pump problems at all. I had mentioned that the water pump seemed fine, and he explained that even through it was working at the present moment it still needed to be changed just in case. And he would be glad to bring it in the shop. Sounded like he was tryin to take me hook line and sinker. But after reading some of the post here he may not have been so dishonest after all. I have been working on cars and other various machinery for twenty years, so I am rather mechanincly inclined. My question where is the water pump located and does it require major engine disassembly( like lower end or cylinder head removal)?
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

... your mechanic was not giving you bad advice. it is located in the lower unit. please read the sticky thread titled step by step impeller change. i'll link it hear for you. also look into getting a Force engine manual. you can do a search for one on amazon or ebay. btw, what was the mechanic charging these days for an impeller change? if you need the part, PM me and I can get you the place that sells them. congrats on your new boat!

Re: 125 force water pump location?

I have the same outboard (1989) and i recently change the impeller but a found a very good deal for the entire housing kit (water pump, gaskets, screws, impeller, etc etc) Just $49. So i change every thing

If you are not good with tools is better if a expert doit because is hard to get tha lower unit back.

my 2 cents

I think it was around $150.00. The price of the impeller kit was like $85 and the rest was labor. So I was pretty sure I could beat his price. BTW, thanks for the link, it is very much apperciated.:)

Getting the lower unit back in place is no hard task IMO.

The thing is a matter to get the splines lined up to slide in, I keep the LU in netural because the new impeller should keep the shaft from moveing too much and allow you to slowley turn the unit to get the splines lined back up.

Its important not to get grease on top of the shaft as this may hold it off a little and not allow the shaft to seat all the way.

I would get a new houseing and impeller just to make sure I wont have a cooling prob when out and running.

You can put a tell-tail on it also.
