i have a 1988 force , 125 hp outboard ..
the engine will not run past half throttle , it starts to bog down like it is running out of fuel.. and will quit . will restart again with no problem , and run all day below half throttle..( the fumes are bad , like unburned fuel )
things that i have checked .. fuel filter ,fuel pick up tube, fuel line check valve ,new spark plugs ,check for top dead center of # 1 piston with dial indicator ,timed engine 28 degrees & tried 30 degrees also , still no good .. the compression of the engine is 150 psi per cylinder.. spark is good ..but plugs foul but still fire
thanks for some direction.. ( cant afford to replace engine at this time )

Re: 125 hp force 1988

Welcome to iboats oleliner.

Check for a good strong spark on all 4 plugs.

If possible, try squeezing the fuel bulb while trying to run at full throttle.

If spark is good, time to rebuild the carbs. And put a new diaphram in the fuel pump while you are at it.

Re: 125 hp force 1988

sounds like too much fuel in carbs
check the carbs and rebuild, very easily done

make sure the float is set correctly!

yes i failed to mention that , i did replace the needle and seats on the carbs , floats are set level , and pressure tested to make sure needle valves , shut off fuel.. ( bench tested before installing carbs ) thanks for helping me .. on this one

I'm far from any expert, but I am in agreement that if you have good compression and good fuel delivery then you must have a weak spark. Possibly when you get into the higher RPMs, the larger volume of fuel into the cylinders is overpowering the spark? This just makes sense to me. Why the spark is weak? No clue, other than going back to the stator, which produces I think 210 volts to the CD units? If only one or two cylinders were being problems with power (still could be), then I'd say change the CD for those cylinders.

If I've learned anything from this forum, it's that the force motors are simple almost to a fault. compression, fuel, spark. Easy to read trace wiring harness, etc...
Good luck!

My dad and I are having similar problems with the same engine...

Could it have anything to do with the fuel recovery system?

Does anybody know where to get online information about this engine? (specs, etc?)

Thanks in advance guys...

Friend of mine had one that when he went to full throttle, it took MINUTES before cranking up. I own one too with no problems, but I couldn't figure his out. He just sold the damn thing before I could get a chance to look into it.

i think i have a spark problem , or fuel re circulation , issue ... i have a volt meter and a manual to test stator or trigger wheel ,will have to secure a meter that will read D V A settings .. thanks fro ya reply ..

Re: 125 hp force 1988

They are KNOWN destroyers of Stators, so I would take a good look there. I've replaced my Stator, and one powerpack, 2 coils. Plug or two would just come and go as it felt like it. Plus the one piece driveshafts get corroded about a foot below the powerhead and snap where they are taperd down, so the next time ya pull the lower for a impeller, take a good look at the shaft. Clean up any rust or corrosion, and marine grease it

Re: 125 hp force 1988

back on line, puter problems, and own a force engine..
i did check the spark on all 4 cylinders ,the spark would not jump the 7/16"inch required , but i had a weak spark on all 4 wires ..so .. book states test trigger wheel ,cd packs .. etc ..one book tells me to check with engine cranking and the other book tells me . engine not cranking .. also a special test meter , a dva and contact mercury dealer to purchase their meter .. anyone know if i can use a digital meter , to test the ohms , or direct volts ?? thanks much
