This is my 1st post on the subject
Funny, the day you posted this I went to my archives and found that I had provided at least one lengthy reply to your Avatar on this subject because I bought a new 1972 18' Caravelle open bow tri-hull with a 125 Johnson and elaborated on the performance including a trick we performed at a company party where I was able to get 5 people up on water skis simultaneously....for about 200 yards before one fell off and terminated the experiment. I did receive at least one reply and the contents went something like: Well that should give me a pretty good idea as to .......

All of it went poof!!!!!!!! Go figure.

Here it is right here: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/prop-hight.752047/
Just in the Non-repair Outboard Section under a different title.

Yea i do recall that. Threw me off it being on a different post. That question was for the prop hight, this is more of what prop is best. I'm restoring an old boat with about no marine experience so i have many different questions on different specific topics. It's been a learning experience

The real answer to proper prop height has to do with numerous things and usually has to be "tweaked" to get optimum performance.

Normally boat mfgrs. setup their transom for 15, 20, 0r 25" skeg lengths on the outboards which will be attached. Considering that your hull shape at the transom will help determine exactly how close those numbers come.

Then what you expect to do with the boat comes into play in that light fast hulls run the prop higher and the more work the engine is expected to perform the better it does lower on the transom....doesn't want to ventilate....suck surface air on the hole shot....getting up on plane. Along those lines is the type and pitch of the selected propeller...smaller diameter-higher pitched for light and fast and larger diameter, less pitch, maybe an extra blade for good loads or cruising with the boat full of folks on a Sunday afternoon running just above planing speed, and or water toy pulling and the boat load of folks.
