125hp force outboard!! PLEASE HELP !!!

Hello Iboaters, Iam a newbie to boats, this is actually my first boat, its a 1987 bayliner model 1810 bass boat. It has a 125 hp 2 cycle outboard.. So I just bought it. the boat has been sitting for a couple years. Before it was sitting the last owners did all of this to it...

removed cleaned and replaced carbs
removed and replaced plugs
removed and replaced outdrive oil
rewired tilt/trim switch
replaced gas bulb and hose
replaced gas filter hose


SO I brought the boat home.. Put a battery in it, Flushed the gas tank ,Sprayed some cleaner in the carb., And the outboard components are immaculate,, everything looks brand new.I put the muffs on the outboard and turned the water on...... I went to start it with the choke on and the engine is turning over fine but it is not starting...What do I do next?

Check your plugs and see if they are damp with fuel after cranking. Sounds like it's not getting fuel.
Is the fuel bulb pumping up tight?
Make sure you have a good spark at each plug.

One other thing! Check to see if you here the choke selonoid on the engine click when you hit the key.

Make sure you dont have a kill switch, a dead man is what they call mine I think, anyway I must put this little cap on a spring loaded switch. If no cap, no start

Ok guys this is what i got going on... So I figured out that i didnt have the kill switch cap on so I put it on regular and nothing,, Then i tried putting it on and pushing really tight and the engine started ( thank you Jesus), so i forgot to turn on the water so i turned off the engine, turned on the water, and went to turn the engine back on and it wouldnt start.. Then my batery died so i had to charge it, once charged tried again, a few times it backfired , and a few times it sounded like it wanted to start, but most the time it sounded like it wasnt getting a spark... it got dark , and the battery kept dying so had to stop.. any Suggestions....?

I recently got my 85hp to finally start for the first time, I thought up about a million different things that might be wrong before i got her going. I had the same issues, she would kinda sorta start or back fire or pick up alittle faster than the starter but as soon as i let off the key would die. In the end I believe my only issue was finding the "sweet spot" with the throttle (in N), also if i use choke most of the time she won't start. FYI it starts every time for me now

My Force 120 just liked a very quick "touch" of the choke when you cranked it cold. Anything longer than about half a second of choke would flood it. As swrupert83 says, you may just need to find the sweet spot. After you've tried it with the choke and it sounds like it's trying to crank, open the throttle all the way and try it just in case you flooded it.

Some of these engines are cranky and simply will not start if you do not use the fast idle/warm-up position to start. You must either pull out the control handle about 1/4 inch OR press the center rubber button (depending upon which control box you have). Then move the throttle handle as far forward as it will go. This opens the throttle slightly and advances the timing a few degrees for easier starts. It also disables the shift mechanism and lets the engine warm up at about 1500RPM. After warming up for a few seconds to a minute--depending on your engine-- return the handle to upright neutral and in the case of the pull out handle, push it back in. Engine will now shift and accelerate normally

Okay guys i will try that in the morning, I did not know that the throttle opens, IF you move the handle in neutral...and i was holding the choke down , thats what i was told, to do.. thats the reason why when i let go a bunch of fuel came out..so when you guys say pkut the throtle all the way up is that in nuetral or do i put it in forward all the way up???

As far forward as it will go while not in gear. And careful you were not holding down the throttle instead of the choke, they are almost the same levers just on diff sides. with mine I hold it down for about 10 seconds, then let it sit for a few and try starting again with no choke and she fires right up. everyone will have its own little tricks.

Ok Guys , so this is whats going on, This morning, I hooked up a fully charged marine battery, and on the second try the engine started,( Thank you jesus).. So I was told that the impeller needs to be changed, and that is what pumps water through it, i did not see any water pumping out of anywhere,, matter fact i dont even know where the water comes out.. Does anyone have a pic of where its supposed to come out of????

So I let it run for about 4-5 minutes, and i shut her off, not wanting to let something go bad because no water flow,,, I just went and bought a impeller for 18 bucks, and my question today is,,,,should I put the impeller in myself or let a mechanic do it for 100 bucks... ???He will come to my house tomarrow evening,, but if its something fairly simple, I will do it in the morning so i can go hurry out on the lake for my wifes last day off....Thanks guys..

I did mine the other day took about 1 1/2 hours. Wasnt to bad the hardest part was putting the lower unit back on, just lining it up. lol Follow this link it is what I used for this job.

Okay I think Ill go ahead and do it myself and save the 100 bucks, do you guys suggest, to still pay a mechanic to go through the outboard and check it out for things that i cant like compression and stuff>>>? so remember , the boat has been sitting for a couple years, I flushed the tank, iam about to change out the impeller, what else should I do before I take it out, Iam super exited and umpatient to get it out, i plan to wake up early , put in the impeller, and run to the lake... remember this is my first boat...so what else should I do , and one last question, when the impeller works where does the water come out, the Exuast.?

The 2 little hole on the back of the leg, water will flow from there. The compression is easy too, go to autozone and rent the compression tester. remove a plug screw the gauge in crank it and there you go.

okay guys new problems,,, I did the step by step impeller change,, and the 4 bolts to the water pump snapped in half, i guess they were corroted, and i tried to take the 3 bolts to the housing under it and those 3 bolts snapped in half.... what do i do.?

Were you able to seperate the pump housing from the unit? If so that's half the battle. In any case put some penetrating oil on the bolts and let them soak for a while.
If the pump housing is still connected this may help to work it off so that you can get to the bolts to get them out with a pair of vise grips.
Use the vise grips to work the bolts back and forth slowly this will help to ease them out.
Take your time don't get in a hurry or the bolts may wring again leaving you no choice but to have them drilled out or replace the part that the pump housing mounts to (gear case cover). Good Luck!
