i have a 1988 force 125hp. it runs great. i have a little problem with my tach. it seems to be reading high at idle or when running wide open. i need to know if there is a way to adjust or is something wrong with it. it is a tach on a bayliner that is a graph like. when running wide open it pegs the gauge and i am smart enough to know it's not turning that many rpm's please help. i had a 17 pitch and went to a 19 pitch and the motor turned less rpm's the tach read the same.

The Force 125, a four cylinder, right. You may have a tach that can be used on 2, 3, 4, or more cylinder engines. Look for a little switch on the back of the tack. It may be set for a 3 cylinder motor, which would throw the readings off by 33%.

If that doesn't work send the Tach back to the manufacture. These tach's are guaranteed for life. I sent mine back last year same boat and motor they sent me a brand new one. All I had to pay was shipping cost.

Re: 125hp force tachs

My RPM gauge was showing 2000 rpm at WOT all the time on my 1987 125 Force. I read this article and my rpm gauge was set on 2cyl. . I have to wait till next weekend to see if it fixes the rpm display but wouldn't the 2 setting throw my rpm gauge to the redline pegged out?
I got a 4 cyl. and was just curious about those darn settings on the back of rpm gauges

If it's a Teleflex tach, those numbers don't correspond with the numbers of cylinders the engine has.

Check this website.

Teleflex Tachometers

c/6

Hooty

Re: 125hp force tachs

2 posts above Gotsaved posted that when he changed his tach from 3 to 4 it worked.
I guess it can't hurt to try, my gauge is old and looks nothing like the one you showed pictured in the .pdf file but my heart sank when I saw those settings. I guess next weekend is test time.

Don' get all dumped out ssuajk.
You know the engine idles about 1000rpm and wfo is 5-6000rpm so set the adjustment where the tach reads 1000 (+/-)rpm at idle and see what it reads at wfo. Might work o-k.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 125hp force tachs

The tach shows idle at about 800-1000 but when I open her up she only reads 2000rpm from half throttle al the way open. I hear the power come in from moving to full throttle but the gauge doesn't move the motor purrs like a kitten except for low idle but I was told how to cure that. I think everything on the rpm readout leads to that gauge.

Re: 125hp force tachs

Should the tach read right at low idle rpms but screw up at higher rpms (will at tach do that) or do I have worse problems that I cant hear?

I mean at the range of when I first hit 2000 rpm til wot she says 2g's but I can feel the power and speed going up so common sense says so are the rpms

Re: 125hp force tachs

I think the only problem you have is the tach. Here's a cheap and easy way to find out. It's call a Tiny Tach.

Tiny Tach

c/6

Hooty

Re: 125hp force tachs

I have the same engine and found that I had to get a tach from Beede. This engine has a 20 pole alternator and is very hard to find a tach that will work correctly on it. Here is a post that I had about this, when I was looking for the Tach: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=009077 This was the only one that I could find at the time. They even had to convert it to work for me, but it works great now. Here is a link to their website, you can call them and talk to them about it, they are very helpful. Here is the one that I used: http://www.beede.com/3AT-0301.htm

You can call them to find out where you can get one from one of their distributors, they gave me a company in Florida that I ordered from.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Re: 125hp force tachs

Thanks for the info Bry
Now to get a 15" Husler Prop part# sized correctly for my 1987 125hp Force.
I had a 15" stock but it's in pretty bad shape but I was getting 34mph in my 1987 20.5' trophy cc. I then found a 17" stock which I am currently running but the boat only does 30mph now wot. Hmmmm would changing the prop from 15 to 17 cause my idle problem? just a thought

Re: 125hp force tachs

Ssuajk,
What are the RPM's are you running now?

I have a 19.5 Bayliner Capri open Bow with an 88 Force 125hp, Boyeson Reeds, NGK Plugs and 17 pitch Hustler Prop and it will run 42 at about 5100 rpms (still trying get these up closer to 5400 or 5500), this was last year when my tilt and trim wasnt working correctly. I have not made it to the lake, as I took the engine off the boat and put a CMC PT 130 Tilt and Trim unit on, with the 6 inches of Setback. I was trying to get to the lake this weekend, but it looks like I have a short somewhere in my dash electrics, so I will have to dig through to find that instead, since she won't start now.

I am dying to try this new CMC unit out, to see if I can't get her up to about 46 or 47. I have also put a new Fuel pump Diaphragm in, since I last ran it. The old one was pretty dried out and very stretched. If I can get it up there, I will be very happy.

Once I get in the water I will let everyone know how it is all working.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
