Hi guys,

Today i was in the process of replacing the lower gear oil and when I pulled the plugs to drain the old oil, to my surprise it was completely empty and no signs of leaks around. She ran fine last season no issues at all.
Can somebody please tell me how is this possible?

Thank you so much!

What was the condition of the oil or was there any when you winterized the motor last year ? Fill it up and watch for leaks in the lower case .
Had that happen to a 9.9 back in the late 70's because i forgot to check for water in LU in Michigan !! Never forgot again !!

Sounds like the drain plug is clogged???
You wouldn't have gone far with no oil!!!
Small pointy something in the hole, maybe it will unclog??
Gotta be oil in there.
You sure you didn't drain it before or someone did it for you???
Come back and tell us what happened??

Jerry,
Thanks for your quick response.
Nothing came out, I added more oil and only took 8 ounces to fill up, is that normal?
How much oil normally takes to fill it up all the way?

Thanks!

You should be able to add a full quart of oil to your lower unit.
Try and add a bit of gear oil with the drain plug out, and also does any oil drain out
after you added the 8 ounces ?
Like jerry said there has to be oil in there or you would have ruined the lower.
You are removing the screw on the very bottom back of the lower, right?

When I pulled the drain and vent screws nothing came out, after I added 8 ounces of oil, started to come out of the vent, put everything back in place with
new o rings, no problem with that. Yesterday went to my closest lake ran for a good 3 hours no issues ,
no strange noises, everything seemed normal, got home pulled the screws again and guess what? Nothing came out,I really don't understand.
Why it took only 8 ounces when it normally takes 32?
I don't get it, where this oil is going to?

Appreciate your help guys!!

I changed my 1990 120 lower oil a couple weeks ago for the first time since ive had the boat. I drained and replaced. It took about a half of a quart to refill until it came out the vent. I checked it again after a couple trips to the lake, and it was still up to the vent. I assumed a half qt was good.

i always remove both bottom plug and top. take a full 2 quarts ready. i stick tip on lower hole. squeeze the bottle till its as flat as i can get it. then remove it very quickly and stick in #2 and squeeze gently till oil comes from the top vent. then while holding pressure on oil bottle i put vent screw in. then remove bottle and quickly stick in lower. then tighten them. this assures theres oil from top to bottom.
