anyone installed a 12v DVD player and/or an HD TV in their boat.

I want to see if I can find one. I found a Jenson player w dvd. Size of an automotive unit which is fine, but finding a HD TV that runs on 12v has been a different matter...
I was looking at some of the power bricks on the back of HD TV's and some of them are 18v etc, that if I could find one with a 12v brick, I could just skip the brick...

how much power are these units taking...

Never done it but I'd love to see how one would set this up and how much energy it sucks.

Use a 12 volt to 110 AC inverter to power the TV. You need one capable of providing the current the TV requires.

Being an HDTV freak for almost 10 years, I can say that the ability to display all that information takes power. They generate a lot of heat too. (not that it matters, but shows how much power). I'd think you'd drain batteries down fast, but I suppose you could just have some monster batteries.

I know they will be drawing power, and likely lots of it... but my goal out of this is to minimize wasted power. If I use an inverter to take 12v and make it 120, I am less efficient, then I have to re-convert it back to 12v... a lot of waisted energery... cut out the waist there and I am better off.

I did find a Jenson DVD/Stereo, this eliminates one need for the inverter.

I have found a great line up of televisions that operate using 12volt or 110volt power that are also HiDef. Even the larger 22" 12volt television only draws 5amps. Most of these have built-in dvd players too. I did see a couple of "marinized" 12v TV's too. The folks selling them seem pretty knowledgeable too.
