I have a 19' bowrider that I'm looking to put a bow mount trolling motor on. I have been looking at 70 pd thrust 24v models, but then a friend approached me about selling me his for next to nothing (he took it off a boat that he no longer has). He has a 2 year old 54lb thrust 12v minn kota. While certainly not ideal, if it would perform reasonably for my needs.
My only point of reference is from the late 80s when my father had a bow mount minn kota on a 18' bass boat and later on a 18' Tuffy (semi-v like a lund alaskan). This was a 30'ish pound thrust 12v trolling motor. We used to use that all day long and we were able to get where we needed.
I'm thinking of giving this used motor a try. I guess I can resell it if I don't like it. It is $125 expenditure (with new battery) vs $800.
My needs are simple. I want to move around the shoreline and docs of are lakes fishing for bass. I also want to occasionally use it in the ocean bays trolling a tube and worm for striped bass. These have to be trolled slowly (less than 2mph) and always with the current.
Thoughts?
