12v vs. 24v charger

I tried doing a search, but I'm still confused. I need to replace my on-board charger. I have a 24v trolling motor, so I need to get an appropriate 2-bank charger. I'm assuming that I have to get a 24v charging system, but how does that differ from a 2-bank 12v charging system?

Re: 12v vs. 24v charger

Some two-bank chargers (usually the cheaper ones) have two sets of 12V outputs, but the ground for each of the outputs is common. That won't work since you have the POS terminal on one battery connected to the NEG terminal on the other. 24V "capable" chargers have isolated grounds so they can be wired just like the batteries. Therefore, if you measure from POS bank 2 to NEG Bank 1, you measure 24V.

Thanks Link. And thanks Upinsmoke, I needed that little extra clarification, as I was still scratching my head a bit. :)

Re: 12v vs. 24v charger

I checked the DualPro web site and it appears their NEW 10A and above dual output chargers are all 12 and 24V capable. Don't know how old the one on eBay is though or if its 24V capable.

Dual Pro is the only charger for me I had a 2 bank that one side went bad I called them to see if it could be rebuilt because the charger was so old they no longer had parts for my old charger they offered me $70.00 trade on a new one.

Wow Greenwing! That's good service!! I have a guest 3-bank and at least one side went bad. It was only 1.5 yrs old. I called Guest and they said it's out of warranty and too bad for me. I know Guest is a good brand, but I was kinda bummed about that. I went ahead and bought that charger I listed above, for only $75. Not a bad deal, considering it's only 3 mo. old and has 15 amps per bank.

If you have any problems with yours be sure to give them a call before doing anything the guy I talked to said they always try to take care of their customers to keep them.
