Skargo, yes: we winch the boat the whole way up the trailer. that way we don't ever put the axle and hubs in the salt water, and the trailer and wheels last "forever." Just another technique that works well for traditional salt water boating. Not for everyone.

Power winch?

Hmm except for the first two times I took the boat out I learned the proper depth to have the trailer and drive it on...power loading is kind of a misnomer when you can idle it on at most ramps. I have a cheater tape mark on my guide rollers so I don't have to think. The trick I think is accurate location of the stern with guides, I have guide rollers and it loads perfect everytime.

I actually thought I might take the manual winch off and just use a bow chain but then I had to winch the boat onto a ramp that dropped off near the waters edge, no problem getting the trailer back onto the ramp when its empty but loaded...thats another issue all together. Launching was interesting since I watched boater after boater try to launch with bunk trailers with no luck since they couldn't get the trailer deep enough without the vehicle dropping off the ramp into the sand. A quick push on my roller trailer and off she went...splash! I know bunks support and travel better for the boat but rollers...they are slick and fast. Urethane rollers make it even slicker.

I love my roller trailer, it makes me look like I know what I'm doing.:D

I guess if you want and need a powered winch then go for it, I see lots of people using them but they seem to take forever to get off the ramp. Maybe its a cultural thing. Ya know...like IB guys and OB guys, all you have to do is look at what they are wearing to see they are a different kind of boater.

Yep, sure is. The white boots use power tools. The flip floppers do it by hand. ;)

Yep, I love our roller trailer for the same reasons. Know the depth you need and you are good as done. I usually hand winch the last couple of feet, slip on the safety chain and off we go when recovering. Launching is even easier. I have no use for an electric winch. Just something else that can fail when you least need it to.

Great point, I was short sighted and didn't even consider salt water. I boat in the Upper Chesapeake, 99% salt free.

I'll have to tell my fisherman friends in their white boats(I assume you meant boats) that they are doing it wrong and must get a power winch to be a true white boater. However, being a flip flopper they may think I'm just an annoyance and tell me to get off their water. :D

.......If you're going to get one. Weld or lock it to the trailer. Thieves like to steal those little $300 items that only require a few bolts....

Proper application of "hot glue" from my Lincoln has kept my stuff "sticking around' fairly well

There are many on here that are against powerloading with some good reason and some not so much. The biggest problem is every time you use the push power, you tend to erode the gravel/dirt at the end of the ramp which can cause damage. Check this link and I am sorry if anyone thinks the thread just got hijacked.

yeah I wondered about that too..... all I could come up with was tennis shoes.... not sure tho so I'll ask.....

what do you mean "white boots" vs "flip flopper" lol

I keep picturing the old salt in the bermuda shorts and the goofy leather sandels or the yuppee in his cardigan, white shorts and deck shoes.... but then tha latter doesn't do it by hand or with power tools.....

Google White's Boots. Custom boot builder here in Spokane, Wa. Construction workers, farmers and loggers are big users of these great boots.

I'm new to the board but ill throw in my 2c. I barely ever use my wench to get the boat fully trailered unless its a windy day. Usually i can drive her up on the trailer real gently without problem.

I don't use my wench either. She's too dainty to crank on a winch.:D
