Re: 12v Winches... Good or Bad?
Power winch?
Hmm except for the first two times I took the boat out I learned the proper depth to have the trailer and drive it on...power loading is kind of a misnomer when you can idle it on at most ramps. I have a cheater tape mark on my guide rollers so I don't have to think. The trick I think is accurate location of the stern with guides, I have guide rollers and it loads perfect everytime.
I actually thought I might take the manual winch off and just use a bow chain but then I had to winch the boat onto a ramp that dropped off near the waters edge, no problem getting the trailer back onto the ramp when its empty but loaded...thats another issue all together. Launching was interesting since I watched boater after boater try to launch with bunk trailers with no luck since they couldn't get the trailer deep enough without the vehicle dropping off the ramp into the sand. A quick push on my roller trailer and off she went...splash! I know bunks support and travel better for the boat but rollers...they are slick and fast. Urethane rollers make it even slicker.
I love my roller trailer, it makes me look like I know what I'm doing.
I guess if you want and need a powered winch then go for it, I see lots of people using them but they seem to take forever to get off the ramp. Maybe its a cultural thing. Ya know...like IB guys and OB guys, all you have to do is look at what they are wearing to see they are a different kind of boater.
