13 sport repower

My structurally sound 1979 13' sport needs a motor. I've had no complaints with the 1985'ish model Mariner 30 that was on it. I thinks it weighs 120 lbs. The boat is rated for a 40 and I agree it would run like a champ, but I wander what a 190 lb Yamaha 40 2-stroke would do to the waterline. I could get a 25 4-stroke that weighs 155 lbs for the same price, but I'm concerned about power. I often run 3-5 miles out of Masonboro Inlet w/ fuel, buddies, and coolers so I need some power in reserve.

Please respond if you have had a similar experience repowering this popular hull.

Re: 13 sport repower

Hi, Dimenius.

Welcome to the board.

I assume that the 13 Sport you have is a Boston Whaler.

I have had a couple of Sport 13s and found them a great boat. I have also tried a variety of engines, from 20 to 50hp. I found that the 40 and 50hp OMC twins affected the handling of the boat and made it faster than I wanted to go. It handled best for me with a 25hp 2 stroke.

Many of my Whaler addict friends recommend 40hp, but they want to go faster than I want to go. One even has a Suzuki DF40 EFI 4 stroke (about 250lb) on his and loves it.

With a 25 it should top out at about 25mph and pull up one medium skier.

Hope that helps. Good luck. :)

Re: 13 sport repower

The Mariner ran about 25 mph with me and a few gallons of gas on board. This was plenty fast. I don't, however, want to constantly dog the motor in a following sea or when I'm taking a few big girls home from Dockside.

I have a 35 on my 1964 13'......When it is time to re-power (which hopefully isn't for a while), it will be with a 40hp

Re: 13 sport repower

I use to have a whaler 13 with a Mercury 40 2 stroke on it. I never clocked it to see how fast it would run but it moved pretty good for a boat that small. I always felt like it had plenty of power but I never felt like it was dangerously fast. You could cruise at a pretty good clip and still have power left over.

Re: 13 sport repower

Has anybody run one with a 25 hp four stroke? Any power concerns? I think the hull weighs about 350# but I bet some of the spec gurus out there can quote that figure right down to the trim options...
