I recently posted a topic on my 130 hp johnson, and I appreciated the responses, and to answere your reply's, the compression was 134 , 134, 135,and #4 was 134 the first time around in october , after i first started having problems while on the calusahatchi river..while running at 45mph sustained speed for 25-40 minutes, all of a sudden heavy shaking of the motor and loss of speed but not losing complete power.. Now try and accelerate and it would shake.. Ok I told you the compression after the trip. Now when I continue to get back I took it to the mechanic and he changes the power pack, I take it out and I have a piston out. Ok , the motor is now re- bored 30,000 over , all four are bored, new pistons and rings , water pump, spark plugs, rectifier, and the oil injection has been disengaged and I am now putting the oil right in the fuel now. Ok , now I am going to break my motor in and I ran out 90% of my fuel on my first trip, It ran great , I stay at or around 35 mph. It time to head in and I am about 2 miles away from the ramp, and it does it again, I am doin 35 mph and it starts to shake and lose excelleration but not lose power, I try to throttle forward , but the more you go forward with the throttle the more it shakes. I try this a couple times and all of a sudden , after about 4 unsuccessful try's it acts as if nothing is wrong.. I am worried this shake is the piston. I don't know.. I am taking the gas tank out tommorrow, and inspect the inside.. One of you had said it would be a good idea to replace the carb, the rebuild was already done , but my mechanic said my carb was in great shape.... Thanks for the help guys..Jimmy

I'm thinking propeller, possibly ventilation. Were you running against the current when the problem arose?

jimmy if you're just commin off a rebuild I would take to back to the rebuilder for his action under the warranty. You may invalidate the wty if you start fussin with it.

What was the cause of the original failure?

Re: 130 hp johnson.

reply to the troubles with my 130 hp johnson. I took the fuel tank out and had this gut feeling to check the fuel. got the tank out and filled up 5 clear clean glasses with the gas in them to see if there is anything in my fuel.. wow, there was a lot of rustish colored, brownish, sitting at the bottom of all glasses. the consistency of the way this stuff sat on the bottom , was like little roundish cells that would like gather together and make one if they touched. Ok when all my problems started on the calusahatchi river , but the day befor that we were in the bay by the gulf and it was pretty rough.. I am thinking that some water and salt maybe got in my ventilator on the side of the boat. Ok, this is a bassboat and being it was getting rough, we stayed on a leuiward side of the island and it still got rough real quick, and after getting bounced around, we got out of there, that was probably enough to get salt water in my fuel, the design of the boat and the ventilator on a low profile boat should have been a no no for salt water or rough water. the motor was rated as a salt water motor , i never thought of the later.. so what do you think of the coloration does that seem consistent with salt water. the tank is made of plastic. thanks jimmy p.s. learnin the hard way

when it comes to warrant the first thing the mechanic diagnosed before he diagnosed that the motor had to be rebuilt which he gave me 90 days on the rebuild.. but the first diagnosis to the problem was the powerpack , he says there no warranty on the powerpack or the diagnosis. I find it hard to believe that he can not give a warranty on his diagnosis. thanks jimmy

I have been try to figure that out , I give all the symtoms in my posts, but when I took it to the johnson mechanic, he first diagnosed a powerpack, that didn't solve the problem and then the piston blew. He said he checked compression when I took it in the first time where he diagnosed the powerpack., He says he doesn't guarantee electrical parts, well anyways check out the last post I wrote on emptying my fuel tank, And tell me what you think , thanks jimmy.

Sounds like some H2O in the fuel. Hows your water seperator filter?
