130 Johnson rev-ing up sometime when in idle

My 130 Johnson is rev-ing up sometime when I go from high speed to idle. What do I do? Please help!!Thanks

Welcome aboard!<br /><br />Funny, I was just talking to someone in the Houston area. Anyway, I think what youre saying is that if you throttle back to idle the motor stays reved up somewhat. It will come down but it takes a few seconds. Right?<br /><br />Is this a new problem? have you verified that the timer base is free and it and/or the linkage is working properly?<br /><br />Is the motor on a jackplate? What will it idle at, in gear, normally?<br /><br />Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a better "picture".

Thank you very much for your response and concern. This is new the last two times I took it out. After a high speed run I can go to Idle speed in gear at 9-1100 rpms no problem. When I put it in nutral it rev up to 3000rpms then after about 30 sec to a minute it slows down to idle.

Is it on a jackplate?

no it is not on a jack plate. The linkage is working normal.

We are assuming that once the motor calms down it will idle about 650 or so in gear. <br /><br />Its not uncommon for these motors to do what you describe. Sometimes if they are on a jackplate they do it worse than those that are not. It has to do with exhaust backpressure. Those that have the exhaust relieved will do it too. <br /><br />Some of the V8's were pretty bad about it. On one of mine I had to actually hit the primer to get it to calm down sometimes if I didnt want to wait. <br /><br />You mentioned that it only started the last 2 trips out. Has anything been changed? Grade of fuel or spark plugs?
