I’m really new to boats. I work on cars all the time, so I like to work on things my self. I have a 71 slick craft with a 135 johnson out board. Looks like the boat was on the water in 04( last registration). I have drained all the old gas out.
1. do I have to mix my gas with oil? There was about 5 quirts in the boat.
2. what all should I do to the motor before I start it? I planed on pulling the plugs and changing the oil. What weight should I run?
3. I need one of the things that lets me hook a hose up the motor so I can run it out of the water. I don’t know what there called. Are some better then others?

Thanks
Chris

The 135's were made from 73 to 76. They need a gas oil mix of 50:1. Bombardier makes a good lower unit oil, the HPFxr. Get a quart. You can buy a set of the lower unit flush adapters at most any marine dealership-they are cheap. I would strongly consider putting a new water impeller in the lower unit first. I would also recommend a compression check. It will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. After you get the hose connected to the lower unit, try to start the engine. If the engine was not prepped for long-term storage, you may find the engine does not run well, and you may need to overhaul the carbs. Once started, hold your hand behind to the two exhaust relief holes under the lower rear cowl. After a minute, you should see water droplets form on your palm. That means the thermostat has opened properly. Good luck.

Re: 135 johnson

Check Ebay for a factory 135HP Service Manual. Either Johnson or Evinrude as they are the same except for cosmetics. Try 220085654967 on the search bar at Ebay.com.

You should find a 1 x 3 tag on the port transom bracket with a model # and serial #. If it is missing, look for a welch plug on the port cylinder bank . This link will help with the year:
