I ran my 1975 rude this last weekend approximately 40 or 50 miles on the Ohio river. it ran at around 4500 to 5000 rpm and about 32 mph with a full load of 4 people and 2 coolers for most of the day. the plugs fouled and it lost power to about 3000 rpm and 18 to 20 mph in the last couple of miles. it starts and idles fine and i am fairly certain that the gas 87 oct and oil tcw3 mixed 50-1 (thanks for the help earlier) are good. i emptied the tank before i ever ran it after its purchase. any suggestions? thanks, Kevin

Check your fule line for air leaks or fuel leaks. Not sure about the '75 models but, the plastic hose clamps in my '90 and '91's cracked and split over time causing leaks. Once they start sucking air they don't want to run.

Also, with that much running did you notice if it was getting hot? Telltale OK? Water coming out the exhaust relief ports on the back?

The fouled plugs may indicate that you are running cold.
It is very common that the thermostats are neglected because it is somewhat difficult to change them.

If you have not replaced the thermostat, you will find that it makes a difference once you do. If you change the thermostat and do a thorough decarb, it should make a lot of difference.

In the meantime run Champion QL77JC4 @ .040 wil be the best that you can do.

Your motor did not come with a tell-tale, but you could have one if you wanted. It is a tube that sends a small stream of water from the lower cowl to let you know that your water pump is working.

The water coming from the exhaust relief is normal and expected. If you don't have any, then be concerned.

Were all of the plugs about the same in appearance?

Ezeke,
Yes all of the plugs were the same in appearance? Do you think I need a tell-tale?

I've been threatening to add a tell-tale on my 1976 for about 20 years. You have to drill and tap the exhaust cover and run a small hose to the lower cover.

I would not do it without removing the exhaust cover, so it just did not get done.

If I were to do it now, I would probably opt for the water pressure guage instead, but you still have to drill the same way.

More important now is to solve the immediate problem.

Do a compression test and a spark test and let everyone hear how it turns out.
